Training

The Solicitor General and Public Security Recruit Training (SGPSRT) is a paid comprehensive training program designed for YOU the new recruit!

The program runs for nine weeks at the Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security Staff College and is designed to provide you with inmate managment, security skills, basic tools and extensive knowledge that are essential to your role as a Correctional Peace Officer.

Our course instructors will lead you in professional development in subject matter areas of:

  • Inmate management and conflict resolution;
  • Communication skills;
  • Peace officer legislation;
  • FOIP & other governance
  • Use of Force and other legal issues;
  • Self Defense;
  • Note taking and reporting.

Special information sessions are also provided to create an awareness and understanding of the offender profile in areas such as mental health and brain damage from FASD (fetal alcohol spectrum disorder), addictions issues, gang and multi-cultural awareness. The Direct Supervision model is also introduced in SGPSRT.

Safety for our officers is a priority, and you will have significant classroom instruction and skill development in tactical measures and use of restraint techniques that include practice and drills, simulations and scenarios.
